Hostility Toward Government Help for the Poor

In class on Tuesday, there was a question which caused a minor stir about why Christians are associated mainly with conservative Republicans instead of liberal Democrats. Well, first it really depends on which part of Christianity your associated with, because some do lean more towards the liberal agenda than the conservative. However, the big reason why some Christians are most conservative is because they would rather put their money towards their own charity events. The biggest factor for this: The fact that if these people donate to charities they know well, they have more confidence that the money will go to the place where it is actually needed, instead of wasted or gone to someone who doesn't need the money. In short, they really don't want to be this guy:

The fact of the matter is, when it comes to handling money, our government doesn't have the greatest reputation.; Because of this reputation, many people don't really like the fact that they may be taxed to help people, when in reality the money may go to where it is unneeded. For instance, I recently heard that a person saw a woman with fancy clothes and a huge ring going into a convenience store and buy food with her welfare card. Its stories like this that make people worry about putting their money into taxes to help the poor.

Therefore, if we are to make any new taxes or reforms to help the poor, a key focus must be on the regulation of these benefits and programs. For instance, we have to keep an account of what people on welfare do both with the welfare card AND with the money that isn't from welfare. This way, we can make sure that the people on welfare actually need it, and aren't using it just to give them more money for them to use on personal luxuries. In addition to this, something the government can do to get more public support for this type of program is to show that there are harsh conditions here in America for people outside of the jurisdiction of just local charities. This way, you show the people that you do know there are people out there who need the money, and that you plan to get them the money.
